Post subject: Advice with the scripts!
Archived from groups: alt>www>webmaster (more info?)

Hi guys

I have a BIG site. With lots of documents, and lots of visits (big for when
Iīm from anyway).
Since Iīm "just" a designer, my site has been only html, css, tables and
SOME free perl scripts (and ssi). Now, the time has come, for me to redesign
my whole site .. my question is .. what scripts should I use for my new
site?

This is what I need:

1- A Weblog (up until now Iīve been using greymatter .. but it is really
buggy)
2- Banner rotation (showsell has been my choice)
3- Form Mailer (nether-mailīs script has a bug, and now Iīm a server for
spammers!)
4- An universal article publisher .. kinda like a weblog .. but this time, i
want my users to publish whole articles, separared in sections, and as
preformated documents (with pics, css, etc)

That for starters .. donīt hesitate to give *any* kind of suggestion ..

thanks!

You might be able to customize this app to suit your needs ... develop
your own templates and writing guidelines.

Not a blog, more like categorized directory. If you linked the summary

As David pointed out, there are lots of freebies out there to check out,
first. You may also want to consider having a content management system
custom-made for you, so that it works according to your needs, rather
than modifying your (or your site's) needs to a particular CMS package.

Keep in mind that I have a bias in that this is what I do for a living,
so there is a self-interest in my advice, but I've found that generally a
custom-built CMS system saves a webmaster a heckuva lot of time, given
that it is designed *specifically* for your site.

That is not to rule out the free stuff, naturally: Sometimes, they really
do meet exactly your needs, in which case, that's the smartest thing to
do.

When looking for custom CMS designers, you'll want to talk to people who
code in Perl, PHP, Python, ASP, etc, etc, depending on your server's
capabilities, and/or your own preferences.

Well, I recommend Phorm for your form processing, but of course I'm biased!

Sounds like someone needs a CMS (content management system). PHP-Nuke is
probably one of the most common CMSs. It is based on the server-side
language PHP (http://www.php.net) which is available on most *nix
servers and some Windows hosts. IMO this is a very good way to go,
especially as there are many PHP scripts for the other ones you need.
however, for a really really huge site java is possibly better.

Have a look at some of the ones at:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.opensourcecms.com/" target="_blank">http://www.opensourcecms.com/</a>

Then tug along to
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Content_Management/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Content_Management/index.html</a>
and have a look at the some 330 PHP CMS scripts - while you're there
have a look at the weblog scripts, form mail and banner rotation scripts.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Can I comment on it?

I looked at the site, Alan, and thought this looks great, but it looks
too complicated for me.

Is Phorm just useful for emailing, or could it be used to capture
input into search forms, and echo them out to a file for later
analysis?

Not bad. I have 424 registered users, as well as 294 incomplete
registrations, where someone started to register, but then decided not
to.

I have no idea how many unregistered users I have; I've never come up
with a satisfactory way of estimating it.

The next release will be out before long. I'm actually cutting this
development cycle a bit short. I got about 2/3 through what I'd planned,
and came to a decision. I've been contemplating a major re-write, which
will involve dropping PHP3 support. So, the next release will be the last
one that will support PHP3, and Phorm will be a very different animal
internally after that.

Did you take a look at the QuickStart document in the distro? The last
few releases I've been paying increasing attention to simplifying Phorm,
especially for new users, with the QuickStart document and generic
templates. I've really focused on this for the next release.
Interestingly a lot of that has involved simply re-organizing stuff that
already exists

Phorm can log to a text file and/or MySQL database. Future developments
will include the ability to log to other database, and possibly other
file formats such as Excel and Word.

Yes Marc .. I agree thatīs the best way to go .. although .. I donīt have
the money for it ... yet!

Some local programmers here are really cheap .. but the quality of their
code sucks big time!

My main business is as a designer and sometimes i find myself in a lot of
trouble trying to get a decent coder! let alone a good one!

thanks anyway..
