Hi all,
I try to either make my sites width 100% to span the entire browser or
width 800 so the site will look the same for all users no matter what
their screen is set to -- given it's width 800 or higher.
When doing 800 width websites I ALWAYS center the page, but I see folks
who left align the pages instead. For some reason this left alignment
of the entire page always throws me off... what's the standard, if
any, or what do you guys prefer? I know it's the same screen real
estate either way, but I just hate seeing all that blank space to the
right of the site when left aligned.
Just curious if anyone has other thoughts on this. Left or Center...

My natural position is looking at the center of the screen. Not one of the
sides.

Center and set it at 700px.

A few thoughts:
1) Asking about fixed width pages will probably just get you alot of replies
about how you shouldn't go with fixed width.
2) If you go with "800 pixels" wide... remember that the scrollbar takes up
some space, as do the page margins (the white space around the page)
3) If you go with fixed width it should be centered. Sticking to the left
is for people who presume everybody has an 800x640 monitor or only open
windows exactly 800 wide
Personally, I can't see any reason to go with a fixed width layout: 800 wide
monitors are pretty old nowadays, most (but not all) people have atleast
1024 wide nowadays... but if you go with 1024 or higher you end up cutting
out part of the site for people with smaller/older monitors or who don't
surf with the browser window open to the maximum width. >> Stay informed about: 800 Width webstie -- left aligned or centered? |

Why 700? It should be 780 to make up for the scroll bars.

Center it and don't make it the full 800 pixels. I would use 725 - 750
to account for the vertical scrollbar on the right. If you use 800
wide, you will have a horizontal scrollbar in 800 x 600. >> Stay informed about: 800 Width webstie -- left aligned or centered? |

Check your size here.
http://home.rochester.rr.com/bshagnasty/
Scroll down to: "Check your browser window size, in pixels:"
There are two grids. You should set your body margins and paddings to
0, though, due to browser inconsistencies, so use the first grid.

Center. Though I really vote for liquid, so any size works.

Or, alternatively, open the Opera browser, hit ALT+P, choose "Windows" and
check "Show Window Size".
The size of your viewport will then be displayed in Opera's titlebar.

Always Left. Comrade.
Oh, regarding web sites, there are pros and cons, subjectively
speaking, I prefer center.

Hi everyone,
Well I'll probably stick with Center -- that was my plan from the
get-go, but I thought I'd ask. As for width 800, that was just thrown
out there... I do normally stick with width 760 or 780 depending on the
page -- I test on about 10 browsers before going production, and until
all pages have no horizontal scroll bar at width 800 I play with the
physical width.
Thanks for the feedback..

ok - so we can design for any size we damn well choose and give the
visitor more to think about than just a boring old 'best viewed ...' now
we can tell them the exact pixel size they should be viewing in too

The Web Developer extension for Firefox (I don't remember if it works
with Moz) also offers a popup that shows window size and viewport size,
albeit not as conveniently as Opera's title bar display. There may be
an extension that emulates that more closely. Anyone with FF that
hasn't looked at it (Web Developer extension) might find it an
interesting tool -- it's not an editor; it's...well...it's
http://www.chrispederick.com/work/firefox/webdeveloper/
It's got a lot of features. Activate its toolbar and go exploring.
