I signed up for
1and1.com

Their WWW page creator wants to "update" my IE.

I now have IE version 6.0.2800.1106
with updates from Microsoft as recent as yesterday.
What version do I really need?

Are they wanting to give me more then an update?

Have you updated nameservers to point to them? Also, it can take awhile for
DNS to resolve...sometimes as long as a week.

Yep, propagation is complete, but the 1and1 system says puredamn.com The
domain is now ready. Web space cannot be configured

I was thinking about changing all my domains to 1and1, but am having second
thoughts,

The update provides fixes to some (very unfortunate) security issues. You
know, the usual Microsoft thought process - "get it released on time, no
matter how unfinished it is" - which will hopefully be something of the past
(considering the security training they made their programmers go through
last year).

At least Microsoft don't force you (much) to use their specific products
anymore. Now, they let you have a choice.

Such as Netscape, Opera, Mozilla, etc.

you really need a different browser or if you have a thing for really
old browsers change to an early version of opera.

That's exactly what I did.
I rebooted, went back to 1and1 and it still wants to update me.
I sent them a note asking what version and updates I need and waiting for answer.

But, I thought that maybe here I would learn something they don't want me to know.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Looks to me like there are many things they don't want you to know, or
at least want you to take your time finding.

I just got an account with them (hosting--they are not my registrar,
and this isn't my (ahem) real site). I am not going to use their web
creater anyway since I use the pointy stick method.

I have never in my life jumped through so many hoops just to change a
password. Just to find *where* to change the password.

As has been said before, you get what you pay for. And I am not
complaining. Smile

I'd recommend loosening the tinfoil hat and using your personal favorite
coding/ftp programs instead of their page creator.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Look, I'm no blonde. It wasn't that easy.

"In interest of security, please change your password as soon as you
log on to the Control Panel. From the menu go to My Account --> User
Data --> Change Your Password"

But try to find the ftp password! Even thought they vaguely said where
it took me a while. Smile

Once I pointed my nameserver to them and it propagated I must admit
that ftping in to upload was fast and easy.

Again, I am not complaining. I can usually figure things out. They are
probably hoping to weed out the (not mentioning any particular people
here) lame brains.
