Hi. I saw an ad for 1and1.com's 3 years of free hosting for users here in
the US and Canada. I don't much about them, but from what I understand,
they're very big in Europe.

So... since there are a lot of folks here from England, does anybody have
any experience with them? Are they really as big as their website
oneandone.co.uk makes them seem?

Their plan sounds pretty good for the price... free. Then again, I think
we all know by now that when it comes to webhosting, we get what we pay
for.

Yea I heard about this. 1and1.com is a beast in the web hosting market,
19000 servers, wow! My guess is in exchange for them giving you hosting
they get to sell your address to marketers and make money.

Hmm...sounds interesting. Too bad at the moment I don't have a spare
domain name to check them out. Although it isn't all that technically
difficult to put a subdomain on a different host than the site root is
on. You may want to consider that unless you are running some site you
consider mission critical, if a host crashes and burns moving the site
to a new host usually isn't that difficult. Just upload the files to the
new host, and move the DNS to point from the old to the new. Thus, the
risk for you to try them out may be minimal.

Hmm...looks like from their software it accepted me. According to
what it indicated my current site will be at
http://s87749700.onlinehome.us/. That doesn't even resolve yet. Which
precludes accessing via FTP. Hopefully their software will catch up. I
do have enough of a clue that I should be able to handle things if I can
get FTP access to upload. There control panel is very confusing.
However, if I can't figure that out, by contacting them via e-mail and
having them send me the name to set the FTP client to connect to, plus
userid/pw I oughta be able to from there to get things running. I'm
giving these guys a sporting chance. Wink

I've been able to get a few spare domains put on to my account, but I'm
waiting for the DNS to catch up. Agree with you on the confusing
control panel. I'm not sure about setting the directory for each
domain. The email set up also seems fussy. But then again, it's very
early in the morning and I really need sleep. I notice the software
package includes NetObjects Fusion 7.0. I always liked NetObjects for
some reason. It thinks the way I do.

Good luck.

The account is showing some signs of life, but I still haven't
figured it out. I'll have to try later, possibly contacting support.

1and1 are notorious for making it difficult to redirect any domain name
away from them to another host.
