Hello,

I will be putting up my site in three weeks, and this will be my
first. No online sales, but a business site informing people about my
crafts products that I make. I don't expect heavy traffic. Tthere will
be considerable photos.

Both GoDaddy and 1AND1.com look attractive. Are there any cautions I
should be aware of about either of these hosts?

Thank you for your help on this.

Sandy Parker

No cautions that I can share,
We have used GoDaddy for the past few years and have had no problems at all.
They often run "sales" on domain names too. We just picked up a bunch of
..com domains @$7.95 and have some we aquired as low as $6.95 per year.

None that I know of (well, ok, never used GoDaddy...). 1and1 is definetly a
recommendation, have been running multiple websites with them in germany, no
problems, amazing availability, premium support and affordable prices. I'm
still hosting one or two sites there, the others are on a dedicated server.

If your site will use MS SQL, stay well away from OneAndOne / 1and1

In my pesonal opinion, based on several months experience with them:

Their tools generally are extremely clunky, unintuitive and hard to
work with.
The MS SQL interface is a nightmare - completely useless.

You can't contact anyone other than first-line support personnel (who
are basically just system operators and admin), except via email.
Their tech support takes days, sometimes weeks to reply to problems
(sometimes they just don't bother).

By contrast, WebHost4Life have excellent management tools and live
support (albeit via a web interface, but still you should expect
responses within the hour). They do give incentives for people to
recommend them, but, just so you know I'm being objective, I won't
give you my reference number to quote. They are also about the same
price as OneAndOne / 1and1

Whoever you go for - please, for your own sanity, not OneAndOne /
1and1 !!

Thanks everyone for your help. And so quickly, too. The advice is
well-taken, especially the caution about 1&1.

Their ad budget must be huge, judging by the multiple page ads in PC
magazine the past few issues, and probably other mags as well.

I still strongly opose that. 1&1 is (talking 'bout the german one, which, I
guess, runs the international biz, too) technically operated by schlund +
partner, which is, in my opinion, one of the best (mass-)webhosters. I have
never used MS SQL though, and can't comment on Dougs experiences on that
point. MySQL runs stable and fast. Didn't even know they provide an
interface, I'd suggest using phpMyAdmin or something similar which can be
installed on your vhost.
Support has been an important issue to me, too. They really take their time,
that's true, may take up to 3 days to get technical support for issues not
directly related to hosting (e.g.: apache's mod_rewrite), but "my domain is
not reachable"-problems have a) for me only occured once, and were b) solved
in 30 minutes after I called (got half a month's pay for refund on that).

It sure is, they're going international I guess.
